Nathan Smith's 960 Grid System

Nathan Smith developed his 960 grid system to streamline his own web design process. In 2008, he shared his system with the world.

According to his website, "the 960 Grid System is an effort to streamline web development workflow by providing commonly used dimensions, based on a width of 960 pixels."

"By utilizing the push_XX and pull_XX classes, elements can be rearranged, independent of the order in which they appear in the markup. This allows you to keep more pertinent info higher in the HTML, without sacrificing precision in your page layout."

The 1280 grid system expands the 960 pixel grid to 1280 pixels in order to utilize the larger displays available in 2022.

The 1280 grid system retains the original 80 pixel boxes and 10 pixel margins. Instead of changing the sizes of the elements, the 1280 grid system adds additional elements to increase the width of the design area to 1280 pixels.
